A 52-year-old man was shot dead by Burma army soldiers near the train station junction on Bogyoke road in Kalay town of Sagaing Region on the afternoon of 27 February.

The murdered man was named Pu Lalengliana. He was aged 52 and lived in Kawlkulh village. He was shot dead by Burma army soldiers when was traveling from his village to Kalay town for a Church-related appointment. Pu Lalengliana’s son said that his father was killed after a bullet hit left side of his father’s chest.

“Soldiers shot my father before he arrived at the train station junction. My father was not killed on the spot. He continued to drive his motorcycle, then fell onto the ground near Sam Myo ward and died there. Local youths found my father and his phone. Then the youths called us and informed about what happened. At the moment, his body has already been returned to my home,” the son of Pu Lalengliana told Khonumthung News.

Local people said that on 27 February the Burma army also shot dead another civilian in Kalay town and injured some others. Khonumthung News could not independently confirm this information.

There have been multiple clashes between the Burma army and a combined force of People’s Defense Forces near Kalay town since February 21. The Burma army has continued to fire shells indiscriminately in Kalay Township. At least seven civilians have been killed by shelling in the township in the last week of February.

Elsewhere in Sagaing Region near the border with Chin State, the Burma army shot dead a 39-year-old man in front of the Khaikam police station yesterday. The man lived in Maunpi village of Tedim Township. He was shot dead while he was returning from Kalay town to Tedim town.

Armed clashes continue to escalate in Kalay Township. The Kalay District PDF has recommended that local people leave Kalay town and take shelter in safer areas because they will soon launch offensive operations against the Burma army.
