9 June 2011: A Chin national was arrested with 32 grams of heroin by the Mizoram anti-drug squad based in Zokhawthar, No-2, Indo-Burma border trade road on June 6.
The Zoram Times, a daily newspaper in Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram state in northeast India, said that the peddler was identified as Liandet (65). He was arrested with a huge haul of heroin in Champhai district by officials of the Mizoram Excise Department with help from the Young Mizo Association’s anti-drug squad.
The newspaper added that Liandet has been peddling drugs for several months operating from Burma and into India, using the Indo-Burma trade road. The Mizoram authorities arrested him following a tip off.
According to Mizoram officials Liandet has been trading in heroin from Burma to Mizoram, India for quite some time. He is a resident of Tiau village in Falam township, the newspaper added. The current black market price of the heroin seized is estimated to be over Rs. 1, 50,000.
Kamzathang and Jerome Punmanga from Bukphir village, Tedim Township, Chin state were also arrested with 11 grams of heroin by members of the sub-headquarter based Young Mizo Association’s anti drug squad and Excise and Narcotic Department officials on 31 May in Tlang Sam village, Champhai district of Mizoram close to the Indo-Burma border. – Khonumthung News
