28 July 2011: Two top Burmese heroin peddlers were arrested by the Superintendent of Police, Central Intelligence Department (Crime) Special Narcotic staff and troops of the 26th battalion of Assam Riffles in Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram, northeast India.

The two peddlers were identified as Chhuanliana Chhangte (32) son of Mr Lallawma Chhangte from Zohmun village, Tamu district of Sagaing division, Burma and Lalrinzual (33) son of Mr. Zopianga from Biate village. About 60 grams of heroin were seized from them worth Rs. 2, 40,000.

The local daily newspaper reported that they were being pursued for a longtime and were arrested following a tip off by the local authorities. They were the biggest suppliers to Mizoram.

Local newspaper added that a huge cache of heroin, arms and ammunition were seized from Burmese nationals this year in the state.

“Most innocent Burmese people who are staying in Mizoram are affected because some Burmese are into crime,” said a Chin elder from Mizoram.

The peddlers were sent to Aizawl central jail. – Khonumthung News
