Fourteen bridges and about 20 houses were swept away by floods following heavy downpour for days in Tedim Township, northern Chin state, Burma last week.
Several bridges some connecting villages of Teddim Township were destroyed by the flood waters including the Zalun River Bridge connecting Tedim and Tonzang town. Several houses were also damaged in the township, said a staff of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) from Teddim town.
“The rains started on Saturday and Sunday and continued leading to landslides damaging several houses in the areas,” said a UNDP staff.
It is learnt that this is the biggest damage caused in the areas in 30 years when bridges and houses were destroyed by floods in 1977.
The electric power plant located in Zalun River was also damaged by the floods and it affected electricity supply after Tedim town was flooded. Water supply to the town was also affected.
“Water supply has been cut off for the last four days and transportation affected in the area due to damage to several bridges” said a UNDP staff.
Communication and transportation has come to a halt because of the damaged bridges.
“Some roads have just disappeared, so we cannot communicate. Flood waters remain in some places” said a staff of UNDP.
Some houses owners were resettled in neighbouring households in the area, said a local from Tedim.
The damaged bridges were identified as LawiLun, HaiCin, Ngatang, Laibung, Bung Zang, Tuisa, Hanta, Khuataw, Citang and Phunlau. Sawmpi village, located in Kalemyo and Teddim main road and Than Nuam village were totally damaged by the floods.
About 125 houses were also destroyed by the flood in Aungmingala and Aungsape block of Kalemyo, Sagaing division and over a hundred plantation sites were flooded and destroyed. Two bridges were also destroyed by the floods, said a local from Kalymyo. – Khonumthung News
