‘If we don’t get what we want, we will continue our movement,’ says the Chin Refugee Committee chairperson.
The Chin Refugee Committee (CRC) has postponed a scheduled demonstration against the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in New Delhi, India, because the committee’s members have been invited to attend a meeting with the UN refugee agency.
The protest was supposed to take place on Monday, according to Ms. Remmawi, chairperson for the CRC. It was organized in order for the Chin community to take a stand against a UN decision in Junethat people from Chin State, Burma, would no longer be designated refugee status, stating that the area from which they are from is no longer an active conflict zone.
The decision was opposed by Chin community-based organizations, which insist that their people continue to be discriminated against for being Christian in Buddhist-majority Burma.
“We had already prepared for the protest, but we received an invitation letter from the UNHCR. The meeting is scheduled for August 24. We will wait for the results of the meeting,” she told Khonumthung News. “We will continue our movement after we know. That’s why we postponed the schedule for the demonstration,” she added.
The CRC chairperson said that did not yet know which issues would be up for discussion in the meeting with the UNHCR, but speculated that the talks would “be related to Chin refugees” and that she expected “positive results.”
“If we don’t get what we want, we will continue our movement. We have already decided that,” Ms. Remmawi said.
