Govt troops took the land in Chin State more than 20 years ago and have since abandoned it.
Forty acres of land seized by the Burma Army more than 20 years ago in Chin State’s Tedim Township will be returned to its original owners, a local government committee has announced.
The Township Agriculture and Other Abandoned Lands Inspection Committee reported that the Tatmadaw’s Infantry Battalion 269 had taken the land, located in Sakaw Lam ward, in 1996 but has since abandoned it. On Saturday, the committee said that if the original owners can show documentation proving their ownership of the land by this Friday, they can regain access to it.
The inspection committee said it would not be able to help people who do not have these documents.
“Landowners must have a land grant or map issued in the past by the government’s land department,” committee chairperson Khun Suan Khai told Khonumthung News. “To transfer the land plot ownership, we need to report to different levels, such as the district and state. We can continue the process after we get orders from the state government.”
Khun Suan Khai added that the Tatmadaw had abandoned land located near Htayzan village, also in Tedim Township. In those cases, the land transfer process is still underway.
