A military unit opened fire on civilians in the town of Kanpetlet without provocation, arresting two people in the town in southern Chin State.

On August 14, a day earlier, the Burma Army (BA) had arrested 10 people.

A man from the town told Khonumthung News that the two people were arrested while riding their motorcycle and are being held at the police station.

“I do not know why the armed forces are arresting people. The soldiers are grabbing people off the street without having any reason.”

Soldiers raided the house of a disabled man in Anauk district of Kanpetlet, beat the man and stole 300,00 kyat (US$182), a motorcycle, two mobile phones and other items from the house.

The military checked the phones of residents at three places in the town on Sunday. This is the first time soldiers fired their guns in the town.

On August 15, a father and his son were seriously injured in their home after the BA fired indiscriminately into their village Kant Tha Yon at around 11 am.

They are receiving medical treatment at a hospital in the nearby Magwe Region.

On August 6, the army shelled Kanpetlet with artillery, damaging houses and the Myoma Baptist Church.
