Some of the Christian organisations in Hakha have been selling rice at reduced prices after the war between the regime and resistance forces in Chin State prevented rice supplies from reaching the capital.
“No trucks has come to the town and this has caused a shortage of rice supplies in Hakha. Therefore, we are trying to buy rice for those in need,” an official of Hakha Christian Ministry Fellowship (HCMF) told Khonumthung News on condition of anonymity.
HCMF has bought 1,000 bags, which were sold at cost and most of which are believed to have already reached the town.
“We do not make any profit from selling rice in Hakha. We only take the transport cost,” he said, explaining that the Hakha Baptist Association and RualU are also cooperating with the project.
Families can buy up to two bags, including those displaced by the conflict. Aya Min rice sells for 92,000 to 95,000 kyat and Thukha rice for 70,000 to 85,000 kyat per bag.
Since early March, the Chin resistance has been fighting the sit-tat (Burma military) along the Kalay – Falam – Hakha road and the Gangaw – Hakha road. Over 1,000 villagers have sought refuge from the violence in the capital, where there is a shortage of food.
Fighting is currently reported near Chun Cung on the Falam – Hakha road and the Gangaw – Hakha road.
