A policeman stationed in Hakha City, the Chin State capital, defected to the resistance along with his weapon and equipment on 6 July 2025, according to Hakha Chinland Defence Force (CDF).
Currently, the junta still controls Hakha City but it has now been encircled by resistance forces and junta soldiers and police officers from the city have been defecting to the resistance forces when they can, according to the Hakha CDF general secretary.
He said: “As we’ve surrounded Hakha [City], the soldiers and police there naturally come over to us once they desert and flee from the junta. Most of them simply can’t stand the junta’s actions any longer. The latest defector brought along a G3 rifle and a walkie-talkie. We welcomed him warmly and gave him a cash reward. We usually take care of security for such defectors, help them get where they want to go, or arrange for them to reach their contacts.”
He added that Hakha CDF will ensure the safety of the police officer and help him with his security and travel arrangements to his chosen destination.
Hakha CDF has pledged to continue welcoming any defecting junta personnel and has promised that they will receive a warm welcome and full security guarantees.
20 Hakha City-based junta police officers and soldiers have defected to resistance forces since the beginning of 2025, according to the Hakha CDF general secretary.
He said: “This year, we’ve received 20 defectors. Some joined our ranks right away. Others, we kept a close eye on for a year or two before letting them serve in the units they wanted. The rest were sent to wherever they wanted to go.”
Hakha CDF is currently working on plans to take Hakha City from the junta and fighting them in other areas of Chin State. Recently, it has also invited Chin youths to join Hakha CDF and take part in the basic military training courses it has opened.
