A Public Consultation Committee of the Chin National Front (CNF) was set up in Matupi, the second capital of Chin state Burma on July 13. The CNF opened a liaison office on June 23.
The meeting was held in Matu Baptist Church (MBC) between local town elders, Christian religious leaders and people of Matupi Town.
Mr. Pu Mang Lai, second in-charge of public relations of the CNF told Khonumthung that 23 people were selected from various tribes and committees. Three members of the Peace and Tranquility Committee, two members each of the Matu, Mara, Dai tribes were inducted in the committee.
“We formed a Public Consultation Committee comprising various tribes of Matupi Township,” said Pu Mang Lai.
The CNF’s liaison office in-charge conducted meetings with respective leaders of the Matupi Union Solidarity and Development Party, the Chin Progressive Party, religious and youth leaders.
The CNF and the Chin state government signed an agreement to initiate peace talks on 6 January 2012. The agreement allowed conducting a public consultation process among people of Chin state and from outside.
The Public Consultation Committee will operate from the CNF’s liaison office in Than Tlang Town of northern Chin state soon.
The CNF formed the committee for the process of public consultation with Chin people inside Chin state following an agreement between the Burmese government and CNF after initiating peace talks. The CNF has been fighting for self-determination of Chin people and democracy in Burma since 1988.
