Around 30 households were relocated from a highway construction site in Paletwa township, Chin state, Burma for the Indo-Burma multimodal project.

The highway road construction connecting Mizoram state, northeast India is being constructed by Max Myanmar co. Ltd in Chin state. Thirty households out of 100 in Oh Temawa village were relocated forcefully without compensation, said Mr. Chan Htun, Secretary two of Chin Progressive Party (CNP).

“The houses, where the road is being constructed were demolished by the authorities. Now I confirmed that 30 households have been moved,” said Chan Htun.

The Oh Temawa villagers were supplying water to their fields. The fields were destroyed by Max Myanmar Co. Ltd, so the villagers stopped cultivation in 75 acres, said Mr. Shein Tun.

Mr. Shein Tun told Khonumthung that CNP’s plans to persuade the central government and Max Myanmar Co. Ltd on compensation issues under the state constitution for relocating people from the multimodal project site.

“The meeting will be held on Saturday and discuss about forced relocation of people and then the party will request the Government and Myanmar and the company to compensate local people,” said Shein Tun.

The multimodal project has been signed between Burma and India governments in April 2008 and will cost around 140 million dollars.

The construction is being undertaken by Essar Company of India and the company plans to complete the project in 2013. Khonumthung news
