A Chin Women’s Organization (CWO) was established on 27 September 2014 at western block in Mindat town with 30 members. The main objectives of the organization are to have self-determination, to promote women’s rights and to empower women on discrimination. Chin state authorities have stopped publication of The Hakha Post newspaper in Lai (Chin) language, based in Hakha capital town of Chin state on 29 September. The Hakha Post said that its editor Lalawmpuia has been asked to sign not to continue printing of Hakha Post at the District office in Hakha by District Administrator and Township Administrator on 30 September.
Construction of a government school building was not completed in time leading to students’ strength decreasing because of insufficient class rooms in Sawrti village, Rizua sub-township, Matupi township in Chin state. The contract of the school building 60×20 sq-feet has been taken by Pu Lai Ram Thang at an estimated cost of Ks. 140 lakhs. The building was to be completed before June this year, but much work is yet to be done.
A woman staff member working in the Victoria (Khonumthung/Natmataung) National Park, in Kanpalet township Chin state, alleged that they were getting only half their salaries. In August 2014, Khonumthung National Park in-charge U Tin Mya Soe had attempted to take action against his seven staff members and to pay only half their salaries, but because of the rumour he changed his mind and paid full salary to four male staff members. However, the rest three women staff members were not paid their salary in full till today, though government has sanctioned all their salaries.
Students of the University of Technology in Kalamyo have said they are boycotting re-examination of some papers as announced by the head of the University after some answer scripts were stolen. On 17 September 2014, the head office of the University was robbed and some examination answer scripts were missing. Dr. Aung Zaw Lin, head of the University announced a re-examination of the missing subject papers on 18 September.
In Matupi town and some villages of southern Chin state, Matu vernacular text books have been distributed in some government schools this month. Matupi Times said that the members of Matu Literature Teaching Group had distributed Matu vernacular school text books to Matupi high school (1) and (2). “Now the book has been sent to schools, but only one text book could be supplied to each school. Mizoram, a northeast state of India, will buy rice from Myanmar during the extension of the railway between Lumding and Badalpur. Mizoram used to transport rice and other commodities by train mainly from central India, but the railway transportation route between Lumding and Badalpur is to be constructed between 1 October 2014 to March 2015, so the state will face problems in rice procurement during that period. “We are ready to open our party offices in Mindat and Kanpalet town and have selected five persons as committee members, but we cannot say when the offices will be opened. After the party conference, the programme of opening party offices in different townships will be taken up immediately,” said U Ngai Sang, CLD Chairman to Khonumthung. Besides, party offices will be opened in Thantlang town, northern Chin state, Tamu town, Sagaing region and Am town in Arakan state by the chairman.
Upper Chindwin Youth Network will stage a demonstration for 24-hour supply of electricity in Kalaymyo, Sagaing region on 27 September. The agitation will be through a peaceful march. Official permit has been taken from Kalaymyo police station on September 15. In the application form, the Youth Network demanded that the main power line in Gangaw township, Makui region has to be connected with Kalaymyo power line for 24 hours of electricity.
In a letter to the township administrator on July 17, locals in Tidim town have urged cancellation of the demand for 800 acres of land in Tidim township by the Chin National Front (CNF), the Zomi Daily newspaper reported. The Zomi Youth Association (ZYA) also sent a letter to the Parliament. Meanwhile, the Chin National Front has denied the accusation that it demanded 800 acres of land in Tidim township.
