Around 500 participants attended the Chin Unity Forum hosted in Kalay, Sagaing Division, on 27 July, the first of its kind to be held in the town.
The event’s objective—attended by multiple Chin organizations—was to increase solidarity among the many Chin sub-groups, Mr. Rochulloa, the forum’s preparation committee secretary, explained.
“The aim of this form is to have more unity among different Chin tribes and to create a milestone for a new generation of Chin youth,” he told Khonumthung News.
Pu Lalduhawma, chairman of the Zoram Nationalist Party (ZNP) based in Mizoram, India, spoke as a special guest at the forum.
“Unity among people is very important for a nation. Our tribes belong to a race. If you live in Mizoram, you are Mizo Chin; if you live in Manipur, you are Kuki Chin or Zomi Chin; and if you live in Myanmar, you are Chin. Until we have a common name for all Chin tribes, I think it’s better to take the tribe name recognized by respective nations,” Pu Lalduhawma said.
If he wins the upcoming national election in Mizoram in November, he said will try to build greater unity among different Chin tribes in both India and Myanmar.
