Villagers affected by the conflict in four townships of Chin State have been provided over 30 million kyat ($14k) in emergency relief from Network For Chin Community Development (NCCD).
NCCD deputy director U Simon said, “As we are unable to provide humanitarian aid for everyone in Chin State at the same time, we chose to prioritize areas for providing aid.”
At the end of August, NCCD delivered basic food items like rice, cooking oil, and salt to displaced people living in eight villages in Hakha, Thangtlang, Mindat, and Kanpetlet townships.
And in May, the group helped people in 10 villages in Thangtlang and Tedim townships located in the north.
Simon pointed out that things are especially difficult for them during the wet season, which hinders transportation to remote areas, causing many to fall short on staples.
Thanks to the recent effort, over 1,000 people from 300 families have received emergency aid.
“They need more than basic food rations. They also need medical care and the children need vitamins,” he said, explaining that they’re experiencing malnutrition, and there’s no medicine available for the ill.
With the fighting happening all the time, the numbers of displaced civilians in the state keeps rising, which increases the demand for aid, Simon said.
They need more humanitarian support from private donors and the international aid agencies, the latter of which has been sorely lacking since the military coup happened over 2.5 years ago.
