A workshop on ‘Protection of Women and Children’ organized by Geneva Call on the Thai- Burma border was attended by eight members of the Chin National Front (CNF).

The workshop was conducted between August 14 to 18 on the Thai- Burma border and participants included members of the Chin Women’s Group and Chin Human Rights Organization.

The workshop discussed ways to prevent violence and sexual abuse of women during armed conflicts. The meeting had on its agenda ways to end abuse of children in various forms.

“We will discuss these issues in the central committee meeting of the CNF, including ways to rectify the issues raised at the workshop,” Pu Zing Cung, a Secretary General of CNF and a workshop participant said.

The workshop was organized by Geneva Call and Asia Indigenous People’s Pact. Aurelie Lamaziere, Coordinator of the Geneva Call’s Gender, Christopher Rush, Senior Programme Officer for Asia, Reno Meyer, Assistant of the Asia programme participated as resource persons.

The Chin National Front signed the Deed of Commitment banning anti-personnel mines on 31 July 2006.

A Geneva Call report says between 1985 and 1995 two million under age persons have died in armed conflict areas worldwide and one million had become orphans. The report says that six million people were injured in armed conflicts; ten million people were affected and two to three million children have been used in armed conflicts.

The Geneva Call conducts the Deed of Commitment banning anti-personnel mines, monitors and protects the use of children in armed conflicts and tries to prevent sexual abuse of women the world over. Khonumthung news
