CNO Opposes Polling In Falam And Upper Chindwin

The Chin National Organisation (CNO) has slammed the regime leader Min Aung Hlaing’s push to organise a national election in Burma, pointing out that the regime’s forces have killed many innocent civilians and bombed their homes in Chin State since the army took power nearly two years ago.

The CNO, whose armed wing, the Chin National Defence Force, is fighting to overthrow the dictatorship, said it wouldn’t allow polling in Falam Township in Chin State and upper Chindwin area in Sagaing Region in a 11 January statement. It was published after the group convened its second plenary meeting at its Camp Rihli, attended by 60 group members and 30 observers from 6 to 9 January.

“The army has been flying air strikes on both ethnic armed organisations and civilian resistance groups. They are trying to form a legal government through a rigged general election. Therefore, we will not accept this” the statement said, while promising “strong action” against people “organising or supporting the regime’s election”.

CNO was established on 13 April 2021 and has been cooperating with other resistance groups to defeat the junta and build a federal democratic union.
