A domestic airport in Surbung Mountain of Falam Township, Chin state, Burma will be constructed by Burma’s union government.

A survey group led by U Thant Zaw Moe from Myanmar Airline made a field visit to Chin state on 26 October.

Surbung airport will be 8,000 feet by 200 feet. The plan will suit Chin state because the airport will be 10 miles from Falam Town. It will take two hours to reach from Hakha, the capital of Chin state, Than Tlang Town and Indo-Burma border areas in vehicles.

A construction action committee was set up by the authorities comprising Dr. Ngun San Aung, Transport Minister of Chin state government, Pu Kap Tial, Lawer, Hluttaw representatives from Falam and some local people.

“The place is suitable for an airport. I warmly welcome the government’s decision. All Chin people are obligated,” said Pu Ro Za Thang, leader of the United Zo Indigenous People.

The Surbung Mountain was used by the British as a temporary landing field for fighters during the Second World War. Pu Kap Cung Nung, former Chin state’s council Chairman had already surveyed the area for an airport during the tenure of the Burmese military government.

Kalaymyo airport in Sagaing division and Sittwe airport in Arakan state are used by Chin people while flying. Khonumthung news
