    Gov’t Plans to Open Arts and Sciences College in Mindat

    Burma’s Union Deputy Minister of Education U Win Maw Kun has confirmed that the government plans to build an arts and sciences college in southern Chin State’s Mindat Township during the current fiscal year.

    U Nay Lin Aung, the MP for Mindat constituency, asked the deputy minister about the government’s plans for the college on Friday during the 13th session of the lower house of parliament in Naypyidaw.

    In answer to the MP’s question, U Win Maw Kun said that the government has already appropriated funds for the project and will soon implementing it.

    “The Union government already has a plot of land for the college in Mindat and plans to start the project in the 2019-20 fiscal year. The Union government is cooperating with the Chin State government on this project,” he said.

    According to the deputy minister, the government will spend a total of 3.75 billion kyat (US$2.45 million) on constructing buildings and other infrastructure for the college.

    This will include 1.26 billion kyat ($824,000) for two two-story school buildings, 547 million kyat ($358,000) for two two-story apartment buildings for instructors, 240 million kyat ($157,000) for a one-story building for administrative staff, 1.3 billion kyat ($850,000) for two apartment buildings to house 200 students, and 390 million kyat ($255,000) for water, electricity and ground clearing.

    According to the deputy education minister, the Union government will start the project as soon as possible, but still needs to negotiate budget allocation with the Chin State government.

    Chin State’s first arts and science college was opened in the state capital Hakha. The new college to be built in Mindat Township will the state’s second, and the first to be built in the southern part of the state.
