Heavy rain has added to the hardships faced by war-affected civilians in Kalay, who lack sufficient shelters to keep them dry during the wet season in this township located in Sagaing Region.
“Displaced people are in desperate need of tarps to protect them from the rain,” said volunteer Ko Thurein to Khonumthung News.
The tarps they are currently using are old and leaking water.
However, the volunteer mentioned they don’t have the funds in their budget to cover this additional expenditure.
He and other volunteers are attempting to fundraise the money to purchase the 50 tarps that are needed, with each one required to be at least 18 square feet.
Continuous rain for nearly two weeks has caused flooding and disrupted travel in the war-torn region.
New arrivals fleeing the violence are also desperately in need of tarps, warm blankets and clothing, as well as food and medicine.
Troops from the State Administration Council (SAC) frequently target civilians by shelling their villages in southern Kalay with artillery, sometimes resulting in casualties, including small children.
Approximately 30,000 people live in seven displaced camps in the area, and there are five additional camps. Other individuals displaced by SAC offensives and fighting with resistance forces have gone to the homes of relatives.
