On Wednesday, resistance groups clashed with the Burma Army (BA) in Kalay. According to the Chin National Organization, the Chin National Defense Force and a local branch of the People’s Defense Force killed four BA soldiers in the town in Sagaing Region.
One-hundred and twenty regime soldiers arrived to a football field in Kalay’s Tar Han ward when they were attacked by the resistance groups, where multiple clashes have been reported in recent days. Two BA soldiers were killed in the field. Two more died when the BA was attacked in another area of the ward while they were collecting money from residents for their power bill.
As what usually happens when the BA is attacked, soldiers indiscriminately fired many shells, which destroyed civilian’s houses. One shell landed in the bathroom of a house located on the grounds of the the Methodist Mission Veng Church, damaging the roof and destroying a washing machine.
The situation between the armed groups in the ward remains tense, forcing locals to lock their doors and hide in their homes hoping their home isn’t shelled. The BA soldiers have set up camp in the football field for the foreseeable future.
On Monday, four houses were completely destroyed after seven shells hit Zone A of the ward, which has been frequently shelled by the BA.
On 28 May, two women and a man were killed when a shell from BA hit near their house behind Agape Hospital. A shell also hit a house on 25 May, but no one was injured. A woman and her daughter were injured by junta shelling on 10 May when a shell struck their house.
