The military regime tried to retake Khampat in Tamu Township, Sagaing Region, from resistance groups, launching airstrikes on the town for five consecutive days starting on December 10. Over 30 buildings, including a Buddhist monastery, have been destroyed by the bombing.
“An airstrike burned some of the houses around the Buddhist monastery on the eastern side of the vehicle road in Ward 1 causing a fire to spread to other houses,” a resident told Khonumthung News.
According to the National Unity Government’s ministry of defence, People’s Defense Force, special forces, district battalions, and alliance troops repelled about 200 State Administration Council soldiers, as the regime has named itself, who started attacking the town on December 16.
The resistance fighters killed many regime soldiers. When the fighting ended, they discovered 10 dead enemy fighters, including an officer, and recovered at least 17 weapons, including a RPG-7, MG-3 and MK-2.
Some of the residents from Ward 1 have returned home but some still apprehensive are remaining in safer areas.
The resistance captured the town from the military regime last month.
