By Lalnun – Traffic authorities in Kalay, Sagaing Region, launched a road safety awareness campaign on Wednesday in a move to reduce accidents and increase adherence to safety regulations.

The Kalay district police force, township police force, township vehicles and traffic control authorities, fire fighters, and traffic police participated in the campaign on Wednesday.

According to Police Lt-Col Aung Kyaw, policemen put road safety stickers on motorbikes and distributed helmets as a part of the awareness campaign.

“It will be good if people wear helmets when they are driving motorbikes. We are doing this campaign as a part of our activities to enforce the rules and regulation of road safety,” he told Khonumthung News. “Action will follow the awareness campaign. We have to make sure people to follow the rules and regulations.”

According to the statistics from the traffic police force, there are at least two motorbike accidents in Kalay every week. There were six road accidents in the town in January.   Police records indicate that there were 5,000 road accidents in the last year and more than 20,000 people were injured or died.
