Members of the Government Technological Institute’s student union oppose plans to build court headquarters on the college’s land.
Members of the student union at the Government Technological Institute (GTI) in Hakha, Chin State have opposed plans by the state government to build court headquarters on the college’s land.
The student union released a statement on Monday condemning the move, which would see a large “modern” court constructed in front of the GTI building. The students pointed out that there were many other available locations for the project elsewhere in the Chin State capital and that they do not want construction of any kind within their school’s compound.
“As a Chin student, I am so proud to have a new, modern building in Chin State. But I want this building to be built in another place,” student union chairperson Mang Hare Liang told Khonumthung News. “This land plot is owned by our GTI. It will be more convenient if they build the Chin State court headquarters in some other available area.”
He added that GTI’s land allotment is “very narrow” and would not accommodate a “big, modern building” well.
Chin State government spokesperson and municipal minister U Soe Htet said that the size of the land was sufficient and that the government could manage the needs of the students.
“We have a plan to build a modernized building for the court headquarters with a new design. If we get this land plot, it’s good for all of us,” U Soe Htet said. “This is a very important building. We have requested and negotiated with teachers for this land plot. This is not really a problem for them,” he explained, adding that the plot in question is 40 feet wide and 200 feet long.
Khonumthung News learned that the land on which GTI was build was given to the institution by former Chin State chief minister Hung Ngai.
