Soldiers who pretended to be from a civilian resistance group attacked a home in Sagaing Region, killing four family members and maiming their daughter.
According to a man knowledgeable about the incident, soldiers arrived at the house in Inyar Kon ward in Kalay at about 9 pm on June 19. After soldiers threw stones at the house, a man came out and shouted at them. When the father and son tried to escape, soldiers shot them dead.
The father’s daughter is in the hospital suffering from eye injuries caused by gunfire. The soldiers killed her mother and cousin during the attack. The man said they looted the family’s house and stole their car.
Later that night, soldiers arrested a 12-year-old when they couldn’t find his parents, who they intended to grab. Soldiers also abducted Ko Aung Myat Moe, 35, who works for Myanmar Economic Bank and Maung Kyaw Min Khant Maung, 15, in his home located in Bel Inn ward.
After several news outlets reported the boy died during interrogation, a person informed the man’s neighbour to tell the father to collect his son’s body at the police station. When the distraught father arrived at the station, police told him that Maung Kyaw Min Khant Maung was still alive, but he couldn’t see him.
“We do not know his health situation. We have no information about our son. We do not even know where they are detaining him. We only know that he is still in an interrogation center,” the man told Khonumthung News. The father believes because his son is under age the police have to release him.
Another source speculated the police might be trying to pin the murders of the four family members on the boy.
Soldiers arrested residents from a church residence, including four children and several neighbours, during a raid in Chin State capital, Hakha, on June 19.
Two of the children belong to Rev Than Thio of Zion Church and two to Sayamah Tawk, who is a teacher.
“I heard that armed forces were searching for people who received military training from an area controlled by an ethnic armed organization,” said a local source, explaining everyone who was arrested is innocent.
According to locals, soldiers fired more than 20 bullets in Pyidawtha ward and flew a drone over the area.
Recently, gunfire can be heard every night in the Chin State capital, where authorities have tightened security.
