A Bamar (aka Burmese) man is dead and his wife injured after the couple accidentally stepped on a concealed landmine near a Burma Army (BA) base in Tedim town in Chin State on 1 October.
A local who spoke to Khonumthung News on condition of anonymity said he’d known the 50-year-old victim since they were young.
“The explosion happened right in front of their house and he was killed on the spot, while his wife suffered serious injuries.”
The victim’s friend said the blast occurred near Daw San Cho Restaurant in Scorlam Ward, where the BA’s Infantry Battalion 269 has a base.
Residents suspect the army planted it but there’s no evidence.
The woman is in intensive care at a military hospital in Kalay town in Sagaing Region.
30-year-old Byet Cung from Hakha lost his left leg when he stepped on a hidden landmine while searching for vegetables in the jungle on 1 October.
According to the Chin Human Rights Organisation, at least 10 people have been killed or maimed by landmines in Chin State since last year’s coup.
The regime is fighting the Chinland Defence Force in Chin State and various People’s Defence Forces as well as other groups in Sagaing Region.
