After meeting Chin representatives in New Delhi, two UNHCR delegates will go to Chin State to learn more about the current conditions there.
After meeting representatives of the Chin community in New Delhi, India, a delegation from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has agreed to visit Chin State to learn more about the current conditions in the region.
On Friday, the UNHCR Chief of Mission in India met with six leadersfrom the Chin Refugee Committee (CRC). The Chin group was among those that protested a UN decision in June to no longer grant refugee status or resettlement rights to those from Chin State after the area was declared to no longer be an active conflict zone.
The Chief of Mission reportedly postponed scheduled interviews with Chin refugees in September and October so that the UN can gain a more accurate idea of the situation on the ground in their homeland.
“The postponement of the interview schedule is very good news for us,” Ms. Remmawi, chairperson of the CRC, told Khonumthung News.
According to Ms. Remmawi, two UN delegates will meet government officials in Burma and visit Chin State accompanied by a CRC member elected by the group on August 25. The findings of the trip will be announced in December.
“They will visit Chin State and look into recommendations suggested by the Chin community. If the results are positive, this problem will come to an end. If officials and Chin people say that Chin State is on the right track with its development, the problem will be more complicated,”
Ms. Remmawi said.
The exact dates for the UN delegation’s trip are as of yet undecided, but it is expected to happen later this year.
