The bus station on the Chin State-Mizoram border is set to open at the end of September.
Rihkhawdar town will open a new bus station on September 29 with the aim to reduce traffic in the border town and to serve as a transportation hub for the rest of Chin State’s Falam District.
According to Lalpeklawma, deputy head of Rihkhawdar’s information and public relations department, the land for the station—just over one acre—was donated by local man Mawite, since there was no budget to purchase it. The township’s municipal council allocated the construction of the project to the Khau Te Family Company, whom they will pay back at a later date, Lalpeklawma explained.
The new bus station will include a main building and 17 rooms—12 by 10 feet each—with concrete floors and tin roofs.
“Construction is still underway and the hope is to complete it next week,” Lalpeklawma told Khonumthung News. “The main reason [for building the bus station]is to solve the traffic jams and to improve safety for both people and vehicles in this town.”
He added that since the new station was located outside Rihkhawdar, there would be more work available for motorbike taxi drivers to take passengers to the terminal.
There are 14 bus stops throughout the town of Rihkhawdar, which lies on the border with India’s Mizoram state. Because it is home to an international border crossing and a trading zone, Rihkhawdar is frequented by buyers and sellers. Currently vehicles stop on the side of the road, adding to traffic congestion. The new bus station, it is hoped, will relieve some of the crowding.
