Construction of a road linking Loung Talai Township in India’s Mizoram State and Paletwa Township in Chin State, Burma, has been postponed due to a lack of laborers.
The road involves one of eight bridges that have been proposed as part of the initiative, which is being carried out within Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project. The project is supposed to connect India with Rakhine State by sea, and then the Rakhine capital of Sittwe with Chin State’s Paletwa by river. An 87-kilometer road will then link Paletwa with Mizoram, across the Indian border.
According to The Aizawl Post, a daily newspaper in Mizoram, IIT Guwahati began “heavy construction” of bridges in the area in October 2017, following an investigation on the ground.
However, farmers and landowners have protested the initiative, demanding fair compensation for land taken and allocated to the road project. IIT Guwahati responded by postponing the project, and skilled workers left the site.
Since then, the company has reportedly reached out several times to the workers asking them to return, but they have not done so, leaving IIT Guwahati unable to re-start the venture. Those who left reportedly included senior laborers and machine operators.
